60 unnumbered leaves [that is, 120 unnumbered pages] ; 20 cm
Manuscript
Title from front pastedown which also has notes relating to events in 1844, such as the number of partridges sent to town during October, written above and below this title
Paging from library's inventory
Written in a legible but rather careless hand, the leaves numbered from 3135 to 3194 with a blue ink stamp; the entries, which are mostly only two or three lines in length, are separated by hand-drawn lines; each entry labelled by date with text indented and each line below the date preceded by wavy lines
Written in manuscript ink (black and blue) on unruled pages with each leaf stamped in ink with the numbers 3135 to 3194; the front free endpaper appears to be missing but the entries seem to have begun after it was torn off since some of the writing is overwritten on a remaining stub of paper; most of the pages have the year written in the upper left corners; ink blot on the page stamped with the number 3180 and the page opposite; final 4 and a half pages are written upside down, as are notes in a different hand on back pastedown with the name Francis W. Desrivieres, Montreal 23 March 1808 and four lines beginning "connoissez vous" followed by the names of languages and a final line "connoissez les sauvage si vous voulez leur vendre des merchandises."
Marie-Angélique Birranger was the wife of Henri Desrivières (1804-1865), the son of François Amable Desrivières (1764-1830), principal heir of James McGill. Henri Desrivières was a seigneur of Montarville and a political figure in Canada Est who represented Verchères in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1841
Former call number: CH1.S37 (1)
The diary describes social, family and economic life in Montreal and Stanbridge, Québec from 2 September 1843 to 14 June 1846. There are also many comments about the weather and the author's health
McGill University's Rare Books and Special Collections, Manuscript Collection also holds negative photocopy of this item
Copy in McGill University's Rare Books and Special Collections, Manuscript Collection: quarter bound brown leather, marbled paper over boards; hinges and joints split with back cover partially detached, spine damaged, rubbed, faded, bumped corners
